The Government of West Bengal has launched Bangla Krishi Sech Yojana to provide assistance to farmers for setting up micro irrigation facilities. WB Bangla Krishi Satch Yojana will help farmers in Jangalmahal areas, Purulia and Bankura districts, which receive less rainfall. It is important to note that small and marginal farmers cannot afford drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation systems. The cost of drip irrigation system is around Rs. 70,000 and the cost of sprinkler irrigation system is approximately Rs. 20,000 per acre of land. Administration and Functioning of WB Krishi Satch Scheme

The scheme will be monitored by the West Bengal Agriculture Department. The department has identified two artificial processes which help in cultivating more acres of land using less water, namely drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation. These mechanisms were adopted by the Department after conducting necessary tests and tests, which made the procedures effective for the purpose.

Overview of Drip and Sprinkle Irrigation

Drip irrigation, also known as trickle irrigation, involves dripping water into the soil at fairly low rates (2–20 liters per hour) through a system of small diameter plastic pipes called emitters. or known as drippers. Drip irrigation ensures optimum use of available water, with the added benefits of maximum crop yields and efficient use of fertilizers.

Sprinkler irrigation, on the other hand, is a system in which water is applied to soil surfaces using mechanical and hydraulic devices that simulate natural rainfall. Equipment used for spraying includes spray guns or guns mounted on risers or moving platforms. It can be applied to almost all irrigated soils as sprinklers are available in a wide range of discharge capacities.

Features of WB Krishi Satch Scheme

  • The objective of this scheme is to help poor and marginal farmers to increase their crop cultivation by providing free irrigation facility in areas of low rainfall.
  • This requires the establishment of micro-irrigation facility for the farmers, which not only helps them to meet their water requirements, but also prevents wastage of water.
  • The scheme proposes the use of two irrigation techniques (as already seen). The cost of installation of drip irrigation system is Rs. 70,000, while that of sprinkler irrigation machine is Rs. 20,000 This expenditure will be fully borne by the State Government.
  • Apart from cultivating food crops, the scheme will ensure proper water supply to the fields for growing vegetables and fruits.
  • The project has received an allocation of Rs. 25 crores.
